Risk Talk: Joram Pieltjes

My name is Joram Pieltjes and I am a 20 years old Accountancy student. I’m starting my third year in September 2018 and I hope I’ll finish my bachelor this year. I live in Groningen, but before coming to Groningen for my study, I lived with my parents in Nunspeet (between Zwolle and Harderwijk). I really enjoy sports like tennis (GSTC), soccer (in Nunspeet) and volleyball.

Right now, I’m busy with organizing the Investment and Accountancy Evenings (IAE) and before that I was a member of the Risk Activity Committee (RAC). I really enjoyed the RAC, because it was a great committee to become familiar with a lot of Risk members. It is an informal committee, so for me it was easier to grow into Risk this way.

He also made the RAC sound amazing, so I mailed my resume and motivation letter to become a RAC member.

I decided to join Risk after a dinner with some people from Risk, including the chairman Tim Louwman in that year. I talked to him that evening and somehow he said the right words to make me feel very welcome. He also made the RAC sound amazing, so I mailed my resume and motivation letter to become a RAC member. I’m still happy that I talked to him that night.

I’ve already learned many things during my active membership and one of those things is the courage to call with companies. The first time I had to make a call I thought, how am I going to do this? I was really nervous, so I wrote down everything I wanted to say and know. I think this experience made me better in socializing and contacting other people. Now it is a lot easier for me to pick up the phone and call a random company than a year ago.

Up to this moment, I didn’t join a lot of other activities from Risk, because I said to myself: Joram, you are only in your second year, it’s not interesting now. If I look back now I think this is a mistake, because you will learn from experience like the Risk Conference or the Accountancy week. That’s why I decided that my goal for this year is, to join more Risk activities and not only the party’s 😊.

I have a memory from my committee time at the RAC and that is the great evening we had at Holland Casino Leeuwarden. Normally, we would go to Holland Casino Groningen, but a fire destroyed our plans. Luckily, we could continue our plans at Holland Casino Leeuwarden. This was such a great evening, because everyone was enjoying our dinner and the games. If I could choose, I want to do this every year.

Before I mailed my resume and motivation letter, I first decided if I would have enough spare time for committee work. After completing one committee and being busy with another, I can tell you I have enough time to do other fun stuff, like meeting friends and playing tennis. It is easy to combine committee work with your study, so don’t worry! My plans in the near future are to complete my bachelor this year and to organize some great Investment and Accountancy Evenings. I hope people will be very enthusiastic and will be talking about it weeks after the evenings. I also want to become certain about what I want to do after this year. Maybe a Master Accountancy or something else?

I hope to see myself working at a nice company with kind colleagues in ten years. However, it is hard to say what I really want. I don’t have big plans for the coming years, so for me it is important to figure out what I like and what fits me. My plan is to join Risk activities, where I can learn more about my skills. At last I would like to say to everyone: Sign up for a Risk committee, because you will have a great time with great people! You will learn a lot and develop some skills that you can use in the future.
