From FSG Member to KPMG Auditor: My Journey So Far

Back in 2018, I was an 18-year-old fresh out of high school, ready to start my studies in the beautiful city of Groningen. I chose Business Administration, not because I had a crystal-clear career plan, but because it felt like a safe and versatile choice. Fast forward to today: I’ve been working at KPMG in Amstelveen for over a year now, and honestly? I wouldn’t trade this path for anything.

Hi! I’m Silke Boterhoek, 25 years old, proud RUG alumna, former FSG committee and board member, and since 2024, an auditor at KPMG. In this article, I want to share the journey that brought me here and maybe give you some tips along the way.

The Turning Point

In 2019, during my studies, I attended a workshop about choosing a specialization within Business Administration. For many students, that’s the moment reality kicks in: What’s next? For me, the choice was practical, I was good with numbers and loved solving financial puzzles. So, I went with Accountancy & Control. Smart move, because it kept all master’s options open.

That workshop was also my first introduction to FSG. I applied for a Committee and before I knew it, I got the call and I joined the Activities Committee. That was just the beginning, many more committees followed, and the cherry on top was my board year in 2022–2023.

Finding My Passion

During my student years, I met countless inspiring people and got a behind-the-scenes look at many companies. Thanks to all the FSG events I attended, I discovered that Audit was where my true passion lay.

As my bachelor’s came to an end, I decided to move to Amsterdam for a Master’s in Accountancy. I also wanted to explore where I’d like to work, so I applied for the KPMG Audit Business Course. For those unfamiliar: it’s a multi-day trip with the firm where you learn about the profession, meet the people, and enjoy fun activities with fellow students. For me, it was a no-brainer: five days of free accommodation, food, and drinks? That’s a dream come true for any student.

But beyond the perks, it was the perfect way to get to know the firm in an informal setting. After the Audit Business Course, the decision was easy, I started as a working student in Audit at KPMG. Now, a year into the job, I still go to work every day with a smile.

Why You Should Try It

The Audit Business Course and my internship helped me figure out which clients I’d enjoy working with, which department suited me best, and whether the company was the right fit. Spoiler: it was. Also getting a coffee with someone from the working field can give you many insights in an informal way!

My advice? If you get the chance to join an Audit Business Course or an in-house day at a company you’re interested in, do it! It’s an incredible way to broaden your perspective on the profession, the firm, and the amazing people who work in the business. And if you want a real taste of Audit, and especially life at KPMG, start your (thesis) internship with us! It’s the most fun way to write your thesis, surrounded by fellow students and supported by professionals.
